Great article, but I think O'Docker misjudges the mood of the English people in 1969. In that year England had the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the first flight of Concorde, the launch of the QE2, RKJ's voyage, and Tillerman getting his first car.

America had Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War.

It was a very good year to be English.
