“I love the Lettie,” she said. “She’s like an actual person. She’s like our grandmother.”

26harbor_ca05 A heart-warming article in today's NY Times about the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School.

The students learn by doing about the water around New York, the ecology, how to sail, how to swim. Most important they learn about life.

The Raritan Bay Shark - An oral history

About a year ago, I blogged about a story I heard from a sailing friend. It was about a shark attack on Raritan Bay.

I got this great comment today from someone who knew one of the survivors.

the attack was july 12, 1916- 2:00-3:00pm behind the old brick factory on dock street--Lester did not scream! I knew Mr. Cartan, a survivor of the attack, he was 14 yrs. old then and was sitting on the dock after he just got out of the water when this happen. He said they thought the shark was a large piece of drift wood till it grabbed Lester--but no screams from him at all- on the other hand, Fisher, had his butt taken off and parts of his legs and bleed to death at the train station or on his way-we can't seem to get the facts streight on that one-- But Mr. Cartan certainly was very descriptive in telling me in his living room his story and what it was like--most interesting, hope this helps- thanks Bob s.

Thanks Bob S. Great story!

My new favorite web site

As I am sure you all know, more than 70% of the Earth’s surface is water. When you use Google Earth or maps, there is no detail. It’s a big uniform blue mass.

Some guy in France has mashed up NOAA’s charts with Google maps to create a detailed map of the sea.

It's a little buggy but my personal productivity just took a serious nosedive.

Big thanks to H20- Bonehead Moves on the Water for finding it.

Mission accomplished

At the start of 2008, I made two resolutions. One to become more environmentally conscious and the second to join a sailing club. I didn't get far with the Environmental thing. I blogged a few ideas and changes I made in my life for a few weeks. I got a little bored blogging about it but I continue to make best efforts.

Clubhouse I just accomplished the second by joining the Raritan Yacht Club. RYC is one of the oldest sailing clubs in America, located in Perth Amboy on lovely Raritan Bay. It's known as one of the most active racing clubs so I hope to be spending many a weekend weighing down the rail of anyone in need of crew.

This is step 1 to getting another boat. My wife and I are mulling over what to get. I want a Moth, she wants a cruising boat.

Anyway, at least I will have something to blog about. As you may have noticed the post frequency has dropped off. I have been spending most of my time on running the blog for my son's rugby team. I have only so many blogging hours in me in a week

Blogging is bad for your health

1194984837281670682dangergeneralsvg Well so says the NY Times. According an article today, bloggers are literally dropping at their keyboard from the stress and excessive hours dedicated to blogging.

I am in awe that anyone can make more than the price of a soy-milk latte in a year, let alone a decent living.  I added Google adwords and created an Amazon store a while ago. After a couple of months I took both down. I made nothing from them. Not a damn red cent. Thankfully I am gainfully employed and love what I do for a living as my family would go bloody hungry if they had to live off this fine organ.
